RESULTS FROM "FIGHT NIGHT" AT THE GREENSBORO COLISEUM

FIGHT 1 Kevin Corron Vs. Tom Casey
Round 1
It was a war from the opening bell for these two BIG guys. In round one Casey came out landing the more powerful punches and toward the end of the round referee Dale Frye gave Corron a standing "8" because of the heavy shots he was taking. Both men were bleeding from the nose at the end of the first.    10- 8   Casey
round 2
The second round was Corron .Corron was the more active of  the two fighter landing straight lefts and front kicks. Casey landed the occasional bomb but wasn't active enough to win the round.     10-9 Corron
round 3
In the third Casey's pace slowed even more and Corron started  to put together some good combinations.    10- 9   Corron
 Decision: 28-28 draw

FIGHT 2    Birgit Corron vs. Gretchen Roos
Round 1
Roos came out with some powerful Thai round kicks. Toward the middle of the round Birgit got past the kicks and started to land some good hand combos. At the end of the round Referee Dale Frye gave Gretchen a standing "8".    10-8
Corron
round 2
Birgit  started where she left off landing hand combos with some kicks mixed in. Roos started turning her back to Birgit. Birgit caught her with some powerful combos against the ropes and Dale Frye stops the bout towards the end of the second.

T.K.O. Win:    Birgit Corron

FIGHT 3                 Brian Rich vs. Damion Jackson
Round 1
Brian came out in the first landing some powerful punches and kicks on the taller Jackson. Jackson landed some good hard kicks.     10-9  Rich
round 2
Jackson came out and put the pressure on the tiring Rich. Even thought Brian was tired he still fought back answering with some big right hands.     10-9 Jackson
Between the second and Third round Brian Rich retires on the stool claiming he couldn't breathe.      T.K.O. Win : Jackson
FIGHT 4                    K.I.C.K. Southeast Regional Title

"Rockin" Ron Chewning   vs.   Mike" The Animal" Harris
Round 1
This fight was an awesome a battle between two warriors. The first round was close with both fighters landing clean decisive blows. But Ron did enough to earn the round. 10-9 Chewning
Round 2
Just like in  round one this was a tough fight between two warriors. The speed and the kicking won the round for Rockin Ron    10-9  Chewning
round 3
The Animal came out and earned his name and started to put the pressure on Chewning landing clean punches and out working Ron.    10-9  Harris
Round 4
The final round in this Championship bout. Mike came out working hard. If he won the round on points he would earn himself a draw. To win he would have to win by knock out. Mike pushed it hard in the last round and in my opinion on his way to winning it. But Ron pulled it out like a champion. with 8 seconds remaining in the round Ron landed a shot gun right hand to the chin of Harris as he landed after an front kick. The punch noticeably hurt Mike but he stayed up like a warrior and finished the fight. The right hand took the round for Ron.
 10-9  Chewning

Final score after the WAR!    39-36  CHEWNING

Chad Morgan was scheduled to fight Jacom Melson form Durham Kickboxing. After weighing in Melson left  without saying a word to anyone and leaving Chad without and opponent. Daniel Corron also came in ready for his fifth amateur fight. His opponent didn't show up at all. But Daniel helped out Team Hurricane and did an exhibition with a 14 year old team member. Good job guys!

The 4th Annual Joe Lewis Research Conference
hosted by: John Maynard and Ian Marshal

It was a great weekend of learning and exchanging news ideas. This year had more than 80 participants from all over the U.S.A. and Canada.  Instructors were Mr. Mike Lee Karanek (Hannagah), Mr. Danny Dring (Brazilain Jiu- Jitsu), Dr. Mong Gyu (Bando/Burmese boxing) Mr. Walt Lysac (Combat Kickboxing) and of course Mr. Joe Lewis. We left the seminar with a  lot of fresh ideas.
At this years awards banquet Randy Ballard was presented with the "2003 Pound for Pound Best Fight Trainer of the Year Award". Randy is the trainer of Ronnie Copeland, Bill Hall, Dale Frye, Kevin Hudson, and Ryan Smith. All of whom hold titles or are world ranked contenders.
This year Mr. Lewis added awards to honor the fighters as well. The first award was the "Pound for Pound Distinguished Fighter Award of the Year" and " The Gallantry During a Fight Award". The Distinguished Fighter award went to Ronnie Copeland . The Gallantry Award went to three recipients. The first was Nelson Lebron of Craig Smith's Karate. During Nelson's U.S. Title fight, his opponent knocked him down in the first round of the scheduled 5 rounds. Nelson not only got up but finished the fight and won the title. The next recipient is Mike Allen. Mike is 45 years  old and decided to go for one last victory. Mike fought a 25 year old fighter and beat him by knocking him down thre times in the course of the bout. The Next is Kurt Halsey from Chet Blaylock's gym . Kurt is a K-1 fighter who in his first K-1 bout fought 6 time World Champion Rick Roufus. He made it through the fight not only giving a good showing but actually beating Rick in one round.
Congratulations to all who achieved for black belt this year. Special congratulations to Gallantry award winner  Nelson Lebron who earned his black belt at this years seminar. Also local Freddie Goad who earned his Ni Dan (2nd Degree black belt). See everybody next year!

SaturnSATURN FIGHT NIGHT
                          SEPTEMBER 25TH, 2003

By Jack Purcell

Heavyweight Donnell “The Real Touch of Sleep” Holmes improved to 8-0 in his first headlining appearance with a third round stoppage of Clarence Goins Center Stage at the Plex tonight. Holmes used a chopping right to cut Goins down to size, dropping him three times in the second round and twice in the third before ref Bo Bo Brinson called a stop to the action at 1:37 of the third round.

Middleweight Matthew “Mayhem” Strode (3-0) wasted no time in disposing of Albert “Shorty Rock” Coles at 1:05 of the opening round. Strode used a left hook to score the first knockdown then a straight right to finish the evening early for Coles.

Light Heavyweight Shane “The Hitman” Benfield (5-0) wore down Wesley Leonard, who called it quits on his stool after two rounds had been completed.

Heavyweight Ronnie Copeland (8-2) returned to Chucktown and used a right uppercut to the chin of Antonio Sloan to earn the K.O. at 2:46 of  round one.

Heavyweight Paul “The Italian Hitman” Marinaccio (13-1-1) looked rusty but did enough to take a 40-36, 40-36, 40-36 decision over Earl Ladson.

Columbia Middleweight Travis Clybourn scored his third consecutive win, dropping Aldric Bryant with a left hook to the body in the second round en route to a 39-35, 39-35, 39-36 victory. The hard work in the gym is starting to pay off for the “Mouth of the South.”

Middleweight “Joltin’ Johnny Butler pitched a shutout against the difficult James Winchester 40-36, 40-35 and somehow 40-31. Winchester’s awkward style made Butler work hard to secure the win.

Taking in all the action at this Bobby Mitchell promotion was South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer, who told the fans he was pleased with the growth of pro boxing in the state and assured that he would do everything he could to assist in making it even bigger and better.

Fight Night At the Greensboro Coliseum
9/6/03

I would like to start off first by sending out thoughts and prayers to champion Muay Thai. On the way to the fights they were in a serious car accident with two fighters being injured badly. It was a great night of kickboxing at the Greensboro Coliseum! Team Copeland represented itself well. The Corron family including Birgit ( Mom ) were scheduled to get it on. Kevin Corron the youngest of  the family had his first bout that night against Troy Boyce of Greensboro. The bell rang for the first round and Boyce came out and jumped on Kevin. But Kevin stayed poised, weathered the storm and knocked Troy down at the end of the first winning by T.K.O.  Daniel Corron was scheduled to fight Lum Loen of Lexington NC but Lum was unable to come and fight. Daniel ended up having a rematch with Jerry Eagan of  Myrtle Beach SC. Daniel came out it the first a little to confident in the fact that he had beaten Jerry before. By the end of the first Daniel got his head out of the clouds and realized he had a fight on his hands. Jerry Eagan was much better prepared and Daniel won by unanimous decision after three. Birgit Corron came in shape and ready. Unfortunately her opponent was from Champion Muay Thai, so she had no fight.  Mike"the Animal" Harris had the battle of the night against Rockin Ron Chewning of the Sportsplex. Both fighters landed hard shots throughout the fight. Mike just seemed to be a step off. At the end of three Ron won the decision. The rematch is coming 10/11 and I can't wait to see it!

ricksm.jpg

Team Hurricane had three fighters scheduled on the card. The first was 11 year old Justin "The Jackhammer" Scoggins. This was his first fight and he was pumped. His opponent Tyler Price is the 2003 KICK North American Champion with a record of 10 wins with 0 losses, but Justin was ready to rumble. When the bell sounded Justin a first time fighter swarmed his opponent, landing powerful combinations and strong kicks. Justin's opponent was surprised. When it was over, Justin was the winner by unanimous decision. Next up was  Tiffany Owen. This was her second bout . Her game plan was to stay in her opponent's face. After scoring four knockdowns, Tiffany was declared the winner by Unanimous decision. Finally, it was near midnight. The Co-main event was  Shannon "The Cannon" against Bruce "The Mountain Lion" Flynn. A four round title defense for the Cannon. Hudson made his way to the ring and waited, and waited, and waited. The Cannon's opponent was nowhere to be found. Someone said they saw him leave the arena about thirty minutes ago. Hudson wins by forfeit
Another South Carolina notable fighter is Adrian "Lights Out" Turpin who came to fight Jay bell of Greensboro NC. Adrian stepped into the ring on a mission and beat the more experienced and heavily favored fighter. Adrain knocked Jay down several times during the fight and won by a T.K.O. in the third round. Adrians first knock out in his career.

TEAM HURRICANE

The main event was Ronnie "The Kid" Copeland against Joshua "Hollywood" Hancock out of Georgia. I came out in the first expecting the shorter Hancock to be like a bull in a china shop coming hard and my plan was to move on him. He didn't come to me so I started to go after him. In the middle of the round Hancock switched south paw on me to try and throw me off. So I switched too. With about 15 seconds left in the first I hit him with a right leg round kick followed by a straight left which dropped him. He popped up at the count of three, the bell rang to end the round. Round two was more of the same I landed some clean combos and started a body attack. Toward the end of the round I spun him out and landed a hard shin kick to his ribs. The bell sounded for the round to end, we both returned to our corners and the referee Bill Clancy called a medical time out at Hancock's request. Hancock was having trouble breathing so the doctor came into the ring to check him out. According to the doctor his breathing passages were clear. Hancock still couldn't breath so it was a medical stoppage after the second which goes down in the books as a technical knock out.  I asked him after the fight what had happened and he said  it was the round kick that hurt him.

RESULTS FROM THE K.I.C.K. NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Congratulations  to all of the fighters in attendance to the first ever K.I.C.K. International North American Championships. In all 70 fighters attended from all over the United States, Canada, and Mexico. There were not as many fighters as were hoped for because of scheduling of other tournaments and the outright lies and bashing done by other organizations. Despite the number of fighters the quality and desire of the fighters in attendance was awesome. The tournament was double elimination which made up for the low turn out. K.I.C.K. President Frank Babcock said that double elimination is a survivor's tournament. And he was right!
I was very proud of our team who did excellent. Mike "The Animal" Harris fought Kevin Garrison in his first fight and won a unanimous decision. Kevin was a tough game opponent but could not stand up to the BIG right hand of  the animal. In Mike's next fight he fought Peyton Russell. Peyton has been around the block. He has won 2 IKF National Titles. He is the K.I.C.K. U.S.A. Middle Weight Champion, The IKF North American Champion and has fought internationally. Mike came into the fight as the underdog but was game and ready to take him.
Peyton won a unanimous decision over Mike but Mike made a good showing. Mike caught Peyton with a trade mark right hand in the second and rocked Peyton in the second. The experience of over 35 fights was just too much. When Mike fought Peyton it was only Mike's 8th fight. That is what we came to Las Vegas for to fight the best and learn form it. Unfortunately Mike did not get to fight again because of a cut he suffered during the fight from a front kick. After the fight the Dr. gave Mike six stitches in his chin.
Daniel first fight was against Brian Douglas from Canada. Brian was absolutely huge! He dwarfed Daniel. I have to hand it to Daniel he did what he was supposed to do and fought hard and did well against the bigger more experienced opponent. Although Daniel lost the decision it was a double elimination tournament. The next day Daniel Fought Kevin Garrison in the losers bracket Daniel put on a kicking display in the fight and looked the  best he ever has. Kevin was a strong puncher though and caught Daniel a couple of times during the fight. I was very proud of Daniel after the fight he looked 100% better in that fight. I felt it could go to either fighter. When the decision came down it was for Garrison. Again that is why we came to get experience and he got a lot of it and looked impressive.  Shannon "The Cannon" Hudson was along with the Team this trip and looked great getting better every fight. After it was all said and done he won it all and was the 2003 K.I.C.K. North American Champion. The winners that I know were  Shannon Hudson, Doyle Gaylor, Peyton Russell, Mike Holcomb, Nelson Lebron, Spencer Tart, and Stephen Thompson. Below is a complete list of the new K.I.C.K. KICKBOXING BRINGS THE HOUSE DOWN IN GREENSBORO !!!!

The Kickboxing/Boxing Explosion lived up to its name!  Cheryl Nance Promotions put together and excellent card of amateur kickboxing and boxing with 21 boxing matches and 13 kickboxing matches. More boxers showed up than was anticipated and actually some boxers were turned away because of the shear volume of fights. Cheryl Nance hated to do this because she  wanted to give as many fighters as possible the opportunity to compete. With 34 fights on the card a well run event is crucial. This show  ran like clock work. The fights started on time at 7pm and ran smoothly all the way through. Around 9:30 the boxing matches were through the KICKBOXING began.

When the KICKBOXING started the crowd seemed to come alive. The fights went as such.

!!! FINALLY !!!
!!! KICKBOXING RETURNS TO GREENSBORO !!!

On Saturday, June 14th at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center will be the KICKBOXING and BOXING EXPLOSION promoted by Cheryl Nance Promotions.

The MAIN EVENT of the evening will be  Shannon “The Cannon” Hudson Vs. Lemont “Bad Boy” Davis. Shannon( 12-6) will be defending his K.I.C.K. Southeast Regional Title against Lemont(30-10). We expect this one to be a barn burner so don’t miss it!
In the CO-MAIN EVENT we have a fight of great local interest. Greensboro’s very own Jay ”The Snake” Bell will take on Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson.  Experience vs. youth! Jay Bell has been in  martial arts many years. He has fought around the world in point and continuous contact events. In 1987 he went to Germany and fought on the U.S. W.A.K.O. team with the likes of Troy Dorsey and Jerry Rhome. Stephen Thompson has won several titles in kickboxing with his 27-0 record. The question will be can the veteran pull it out against the young rising star?

Fighters will be coming from throughout the southeastern United States . Our very own Mike Harris , Daniel Corron, Kevin Leonard, Freddie Goad and Kevin Corron will be mixing it up. World class trainers like Ray Thompson, Rick Davis will be bringing their teams to get it on. So don’t miss it!  BE THERE !!!!!!!!!

****Check back after the event for results!!!
